theBalm. I’d heard the raves, seen the coveted A+ ratings, but up until recently, I hadn’t tried any of theBalm’s palettes.

I tried to talk myself out of theBalm Meet Matt(e) Nude palette ($42) because, as evidenced here and here, I’m already swimming in neutral matte eyeshadow. But I finally caved.

Meet Matt(e) Nude consists of nine large matte shadows. While all the colors are neutrals, theBalm manages to include some interesting, more-than-just-brown shades. There’s the purple-y tones to Matt Hung, the yellow in Matt Lombardi, the navy in Matt Johnson… these colors complement both nude and bolder looks.

 L-R: Johnson, Garcia, Malloy, Rosen

Matt Johnson: grey-navy

Matte Garcia: plummy mahagony

Matt Malloy: ivory-white

Matt Rosen: mid-tone neutral-warm brown

L-R: Wood, Singh, Abdul, Lombardi, Hung

Matt Wood: deep cool greybrown

Matt Singh: mid-tone seashell pink

Matt Abdul: light slate grey

Matt Lombardi: burnt yellow

Matt Hung: mid-tone greyish purple

All the swatches were done without primer and I used my finger to apply. Pigmentation was good across the board. Some of the shades have a bit of a drier consistency (which often seems the case with mattes) yet they all applied smoothly. I found they were exceptionally long-wearing, particularly the darker shades. theBalm states these double as liners and they do work well that way. The darker colors really clung to my eyelids – almost like a slight stain, though I had no issues removing them with just a gentle cleanser and water. I’d say that, for a matte formula, these shadows are pretty darn good. Not the absolute best, but worth the money if these are shades you’d use.

What do you think – are these shades you’d use or do you already own enough neutrals? Have you tried other palettes from theBalm?

Hey Catherine, this palette looks nice! It seems hard to find good mattes, so I bet those who like mattes will be thrilled to lay their hands on this :)

      Hi Sunny! I agree ♥

  • TracyBeautyReflections

This is one palette I keep wanting to get! Some day! I love good mattes and theBalm makes great ones!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Hi Tracy! Ha I have a “some day” list too… this was on it for a long time! ♥

      • Christine

Check HauteLook for this palette. They often have it for about half price almost every time they’re featured.

        • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks for the tip, Christine! I’ve seen theBalm on Hautelook, though I don’t check it regularly enough to catch all their sales ♥

          • Christine

I don’t either, but they always email me when theBalm’s coming up. I think it’s because I’ve purchased it in the past. If I remember, I’ll tweet you or something next time I get a notice! :)

Love these shades! You can never have too many neutrals in my opinion, they are all so very different :-) this selection looks like a lot of fun to play with!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Hi Taylor! It really is, I’m usually a bit hesitant with color and these shades are great for incorporating something more than basic brown while still staying pretty neutral. ♥

  • Lily

I love The Balm eye shadows. I have their Shady Lady palettes but I haven’t tried this matte one. Looks like a great matte neutral palette and they’re not easy to come by, if you ask me :-)

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Hi Lily! Totally agree. I’ve heard so many raves about the Shady Lady palettes, but haven’t picked any of them up because they all included at least a couple colors I didn’t think I’d use much. This palette was the perfect opportunity to try out the brand for me ♥

  • Icequeen81

I don’t consider browns nude, but they are perfect in this palette as brow fillers

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

A lot of the shades aren’t your typical “nude” neutral, just mattes with neutral tones overall, but lots of interesting nuances to the shades ♥

Haha, the packaging is really lame :-) But in a funny way.

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Haha oh gosh I know, I never go for this sort of packaging ♥

  • Krystle Kouture

I am a shimmer girl, but love how pigmented these mattes are!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Me too, it’s hard to find nicely pigmented mattes! ♥

  • Christine

I love this palette, but I rarely reach for it. It’s just nice to have all those mattes in one place. And the shadows are so BIG! :) I have a bunch of stuff from theBalm and I always forget about it for some reason. I think it’s because I get it all from HauteLook & by the time it shows up, I’m on to my next obsession! :) I agree that this palette is SUPER pigmented – at least for mattes! And there is a great variety of neutral mattes, which is so hard to find. The Naked Basics shades are all SO similar to me.

Hi Christine! I know, the pans are so much bigger than the other palette pans, though I’m not sure how much they hold exactly. It feels like the type of palette that would be amazing for a professional makeup artist. The shades remind me of Eve Pearl’s makeup for some reason, I guess because she uses a lot of deep matte shades and mixes them together. I don’t have much from theBalm, surprisingly. Haha I know what you mean… Hautelook shipping takes forever. ♥
