When it comes to lip products, traditional lipsticks have never worked well for me. Even moisturizing formulas tend to dry out my lips and they never last more than an hour or two. For everyday, tinted lip balms are my lip product of choice (and usually, it’s Burt’s Bees Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil). So, when I heard about NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams - and their promise of long-lasting silky matte color – I knew they might be for me. I tried one, loved it, and by now I’ve managed to end up with five shades: Stockholm, London, Tokyo, San Paulo, and Antwerp. These are super pigmented with a velvety, almost mousse-like consistency. They feel soft and light on – they’re nothing like the heavy texture of traditional matte lipsticks. They’re also not like the long-wearing lip products with liquidy color on one end and clear balm on the other. Other brands now sell similar products, but at the time NYX released these, it was the first I’d seen of this concept.

The way I use these is by applying a small amount then blending the color into my lips with my finger. After a few minutes, they set to a drier consistency. To my amazement, they stay put for hours. These definitely don’t add moisture, but they also don’t dry out my lips. I will say that because I naturally have dry lips, I tend to apply lip balm consistently throughout the day. Last time I wore one of these, I felt like I needed to apply lip balm after about three hours, which is pretty typical for me when I’m not wearing anything on my lips. While wearing this product, I just apply lip balm over the lip cream. I find this also helps make sure the color fades evenly. I’ve applied lip balm under these as well and that makes them feel less dry once they set – it just decreases their staying power. These do have a scent – kind of like vanilla cupcakes.
Stockholm: soft natural pink with peachy tones
London: pinky-beige-brown nude
Tokyo: very light cool pink
San Paulo: deep berry rose
Antwerp: vibrant reddish coral
I don’t have all the shades – NYX sells eleven. Nonpareil Boutique has swatches of all eleven colors and My Kichay Kit has swatches of all eleven colors on lips, so you can check those out to see the colors I’m missing. One thing I love about these lip creams is that they work well when mixed. I just mix colors on the back of my hand then blend them into my lips with my finger. One of my favorite combos is Stockholm with London and Antwerp – it creates a natural warm-toned nude that I can customize for my skin tone.

Where to Buy
You can get NYX from ULTA and tons of different stores online. But there are some sites that are better than others. I’ve purchased almost all my NYX products from either Cherry Culture (once or twice a year they have NYX products at some crazy discount, I think 40% or 50% off) or Joy’s Cosmetics on ebay – she’s a “power seller” and I highly recommend her store (I’m in no way connected with her personally, I’ve just had really good experiences buying from her).
Varies by retailer; in the $4.75-$6.00 range.
