Here at Buying Cruelty-Free, lip balm is a serious topic. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you probably know that I’m always on the hunt for good ones. My lips are naturally dry and in the winter, the situation is abysmal. Cracking, peeling, bleeding – not to brag, but I get it all. As such, I was thrilled when Lippy Girl founder Darcey Diehl sent me three moisture-packed products: the Lip Love Lip Conditioning Stick, ShaZam Lip Shimmer, and the new Extra Virgin Lip Gloss.

L-R: Extra Virgin Lip Gloss, Lip Love Conditioning Stick, ShaZam Shimmer

The Extra Virgin Lip Gloss is vegan and paraben-free. It’s a hybrid of a moisturizing lip treatment and a lip gloss. It feels absolutely lovely on the lips – completely non-sticky and lightweight. The ingredients list is full of moisturizing oils, shea and cocoa butter, and includes orange oil, which gives the gloss a citrus scent and flavor.

When Darcey was asked by Flats Are For Quitters which Lippy Girl product she’s most proud of, she picked this gloss, saying:

“I am very proud of my new vegan glosses.  I hope they prove that glosses do not need polybutene and synthetics, or animal derivatives like lanolin to be totally amazing.  Plus, the process of getting them USDA certified was expensive and challenging, but a great experience as well.”

The Lip Love Conditioning Stick is a clear lip balm. When you apply it, it sort of melts into your lips, the way oils do. If you’ve ever applied jojoba oil or other moisturizing oils to your lips, the feel is very similar. It has a fresh minty scent, which I love for lip balms.

Lippy Girl ShaZam Lippy Girl Extra Virgin Lip Gloss, Lip Love, ShaZam Shimmer

ShaZam Lip Shimmer is a shimmery balm formula in a thin tube, similar to Soft Lips’ packaging. While technically a lip product, it doubles as a multipurpose highlighter. It has more of a waxy consistency than the Lip Love, which makes it better for cheek bones/brow bones/anywhere you want to highlight. The shimmer particles are tiny and give a glowy, light reflective sheen. If you apply tons of it, it does get super frosty, but one or two thin layers is subtle and beautiful. I don’t apply this over my whole lips – just on the center of my lower lip and my cupid’s bow. This lip shimmer is perfect for adding a bit of extra glow to any Lippy Girl lipstick (which, as of now, are all shimmer-free). ShaZam contains lime oil which gives it it’s citrus scent and flavor.

The Basics

  • Gaby Salmon

Hey, just discovered this blog and am thoroughly enjoying the cruelty free items, my lips are terrible in the winter so a lip balm that is guiltfree and good is always up my street!

    • Catherine

Thanks so much for your comment, Gaby! So glad you’re enjoying the blog. These lip balms are among the most moisturizing I’ve tried ♥

  • Sunny

I’m not a gloss girl, but a good chapstick is always welcome! I tend to slather something heavy on at bedtime (my go-to is NUXE honey lip balm), but in this weather I could use a little help during daytime as well. I’m still living on the two mini Fresh ones I got from Sephora for my birthday. They’re pretty nice!

    • Catherine

I haven’t tried NUXE, I’ll have to check it out. I usually like anything with honey :) Those mini fresh ones are nice and I actually kind of like the tiny size – they’re jean-pocket-portable! ♥

  • Becca

I’ve been meaning to try this one–I hear a lot of good things! My lips are SUPER dry too–ALL. THE. TIME. It sucks, so I definitely feel ya :P Must definitely give these a go!

    • Catherine

Haha exactly! I’m always amazed by (and jealous of) people who can go more than a few hours without reapplying lip balm ;) These are among the most moisturizing products I’ve tried! The founder/owner of Lippy Girl said they’ll be expanding to more US retailers in 2013, so hopefully it’ll be easier for people to get a hold of soon, too ♥

I haven’t tried this, but I absolutely love that it’s also vegan!!!

    • Catherine

Thanks for your comment, Moxie! I love that it’s vegan too. And just recently a Lippy Girl lipstick was used in a Pixiwoo video ♥

  • Yolanda Grunewald

Wow these look great.. Never heard ofnthe brand before.. My lips could definitely use something like this right now :)
