If you saw my last Product Preview, you know I recently received a package from FLOWER Beauty. One of the included products was the About Face Foundation with Primer ($13.98). Since it arrived, I’ve worn it nearly everyday and am really enjoying its incredibly natural finish.

About Face comes in a glass bottle with a white plastic cap and pump dispenser. The weight of the glass isn’t great for traveling, but it does give the product a “higher end” feel.

I received shade LF5. It has a neutral undertone, but with enough warmth to work for my skin. It seems to appear warmer in swatches than in person, though the left swatch is fairly accurate.

Application can be tricky, as the formula has a somewhat tacky feel, making it really “stick” to the skin. When applied, it’s like it melds with your skin immediately. This helps provide its very natural, skin-like finish, however it also means you need to blend quickly. Once its set into the skin, it stays put. I recommend using a beauty blender-style sponge or a flat-top synthetic brush. Rather than just stippling the foundation on, I find it’s best to really press it firmly into the skin.

Coverage is very light. I tend to set it with a silicia powder to lock in the foundation and tone down the dewiness slightly. With a light dusting of powder, this lasts all day on me – which is not often the case with light, hydrating foundation.

In the coming summer months, I’m confident I’ll keep reaching for About Face. It’s a foundation you can wear in the brightest sunlight without a second thought – as long as your shade matches, it will be undetectable on your skin. However, if you’re looking for substantial coverage or don’t like glowy finishes, this likely isn’t for you.

In addition to the FLOWER About Face Foundation, I’m wearing FLOWER Beauty’s Win Some, Rouge Some Crème Blush in Rose-O-Den-DronColor Play Crème Eyeshadow in Wild Geranium, and Lash Knockout Volumizing Mascara. I also used the cream blush as a lip color over lip balm.

    looks great and not cakey

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks! It’s a foundation you never have to worry about becoming cakey, it’s just such a lightweight formula :)

    Love it!! Very pretty.

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thank you, Martha! I’m glad they sent me shade 5. I probably wouldn’t have picked it because it looks neutral in the bottle (almost pinky in comparison to some of the other shades – which does NOT work for me!), but once applied it gets warmer and matches me so well ♥

    Looks great on you!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

      Thanks so much! ♥

  • TinaBowling

Looks great on you! I know it wouldn’t work for me as I don’t typically look for a dewy finish.

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thank you, Tina! Yes, if you’re not a fan of dewey finishes, this is definitely one to stay away from ♥

      • http://twitter.com/MakeUpGuineaPig Christine

I find that you can tone down the dewiness with a mattifying-type powder. I usually use the Too Faced Primed & Poreless. I do tend to need to touch up throughout the day, but it can definitely be made into more of a satin finish.

This looks great on you. I haven’t tried it yet. I like that it comes with a hygenic pump. That’s ideal for travel. What other brand of foundation would you compare this to?

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Hey Liza! That’s a good question. I can’t recall using a foundation quite like it before (and I’ve used a LOT) – the way it sticks onto skin is just different than anything I’ve tried. In terms of the finish, I would say it ends up looking like just a bit more coverage than say, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, perhaps if you mixed in a tiny drop of luminizing primer. But it feels different than a tinted moisturizer. I remember watching a review of Illamasqua Skin Base by pixiwoo and the way they described the feel of that foundation sounded similar, although the finish of that foundation is very different/much heavier.♥

Wow, a reasonably priced, transfer-resistant foundation with an excellent formula AND a pump? It’s like the manufacturers are finally reading blogs =) this looks gorgeous on you!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Haha I KNOW, right?! You summed it up perfectly, really. The transfer-resistance is a huge plus, I hate going to hug someone and ending up leaving foundation marks on their shirts haha (it’s happened more times than I care to remember, ugh) Thank you so much! ♥

Oh Hello gorgeous! The foundation looks really natural.

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Hello gorgeous yourself! It really has a very skin-like yet dewey finish – it’s a foundation I think you’d appreciate ♥

  • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks so much! If you check it out, let me know how you like it. It’s a foundation I feel confident wearing in the bright sunlight, knowing it won’t look like I’m wearing foundation. ♥

I almost forgot I had this foundation! I’m not sure why because I like it quite a bit and wore it almost exclusively for a month or so.

I typically just use my fingers to apply it and haven’t had trouble with blending.

I was surprised by how light the coverage is, but it looks beautiful on you! It’s really comfortable too – like nothing at all – and it definitely lasts!

I really love the packaging too. The pump is great and it feels expensive. You’re right though, not the best for traveling. :)

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks, Christine! It really is so comfortable – I’m wearing it right now after 5 hours in the hot sun and it’s still very transfer-resistant. I’m glad that fingers work well for you to apply, my skin seems to go flaky really easily so I usually never use fingers, but good to know that others may not find this as quick setting as I did. The packaging definitely does feel expensive – not bad for a foundation less than $15! ♥

  • http://twitter.com/mostlysunnyblog Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Ahhh this foundation looks great on you! I prefer natural finishes as well, though I don’t really know if I can use anything with a glowy finish in summer. Combination skin you see ;)

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks, Sunny! Yes, you must love glowy finishes with this foundation :) I probably should tone down the glowy factor in summer, as my skin gets much oilier, but I think I tend to actually use MORE shimmery products haha – warm weather just makes me gravitate towards shine ♥

  • gabyfauchon

The glass bottles looks very luxurious! I’ve never heard of a foundation with primer before!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

It’s really nice packaging, especially considering it costs less than $15! I think they’re calling it “foundation with primer” because the formula contains silicones like many primers, but of course most foundations nowadays have silicones too. Who knows ♥

  • Kath TheFabZilla

I’ve been waiting for this brand to come to my local Walmart. I’ll definitely give this a try. By the way, you look stunning!!!!!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Awww thank you so much, Kathryne!! My nearest Walmart is like 30 mins away and they don’t even carry it, so it’s online shopping for me (aka looking up everything on beauty blogs before ordering :)) ♥

  • convenientbeauty

Looks really lovely on you!! Cute packaging too. An sample is a must when I buy foundation. That’s why I can’t never find a good foundation at drugstore. What’s your skin tone Catherine?

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks so much, Joanne! I know, the samples thing is a big problem with drugstore foundations. At Target, they have testers out (I wouldn’t use them on my face, but it does give a better idea of the color… ideally, they’d offer hygienic samples to test out wear though). I don’t know about Walmart. My skintone is about NC25, but these photos were coming right out of winter so maybe even a bit paler here. Jane at Life’s Entropy has swatches of her wearing the next shade, #6, and is looks a lot more yellow (which is usually good for me) – I may switch to that shade later in the summer. One great thing about this foundation (esp for drugstores) – it seems to have a good range of yellow undertones ♥

the foundation looks very natural and gives an even finish, pretty!

    • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

Thanks for your comment, Claire! It’s a lovely product – definitely rivals “high end” foundations.♥
